Juliet Mills in Nurse on Wheels; Award-Winning The Bespoke Overcoat; Carve Her Name With Pride; Katharine Hepburn & Bob Hope in The Iron Petticoat

Wednesday 15 July at 3:40pm, tune in for the 1958 war drama, Carve Her Name With Pride. Based on the powerful true story of the young widow, Violette Szabo, who paid the ultimate price after being recruited to work as a spy in occupied France during the Second World War, the film stars the fantastic Virginia McKenna in one of her finest performances. McKenna was delighted to be able to bring Szabo’s story to the screen, even though she found the role emotionally challenging and “couldn't ‘cut off' at the end of the day’s filming”. It’s said that filming took 92 days and that McKenna took just two days off – to marry her beloved Bill Travers and enjoy a brief honeymoon! Co-starring Paul Scofield and Jack Warner, the film also features a fleeting, uncredited appearance by Michael Caine, so keep your eyes peeled!
Dear Supporters of Film and TV history,
Looking forward to seeing you all in Monmouth next weekend – it's going to be a brilliant weekend of entertainment – we've some GREAT lost films playing as well, including a lost Alistair Sim film which will be airing on the Sunday. A huge treat for celluloid lovers of film on the big screen! Can't say much but fans of celluloid will not be disappointed! LAST CHANCE to join us: https://renownfilms.co.uk/product-category/the-talking-pictures-festival-of-film-tv-at-the-savoy-monmouth-saturday-18th-sunday-19th-july-2026/
Just before we launch into this week’s line-up, we wanted to share a brilliant football observation sent in by viewer Martin Hutchinson in Lancashire. Martin mentioned that the last time England beat Mexico in the World Cup was in 1966. Back then, the match was shown live on ITV - and was immediately followed by… our very own Sergeant Cork!
Anyway, onto the listings and the Mills family are a talented bunch, aren’t they? We only mention it as on Tuesday 14 July at 3.55pm, we’ve the TPTV premiere of Nurse on Wheels starring a 22-year-old Juliet Mills in the title role. This charming 1963 comedy sees Mills playing a young district nurse who moves to a country village and sets about winning the respect of her new patients. The film’s full of eccentric characters, gentle humour and the odd slapstick moment and is mighty good fun! With familiar faces from the Carry-On films, including Jim Dale and Joan Sims, and produced and directed by the legendary team of Peter Rogers and Gerald Thomas, it’s little wonder Nurse on Wheels is often regarded as an unofficial Carry-On film. Enjoy!
It might only be 33 minutes long, but the 1955 drama The Bespoke Overcoat, on Tuesday 14 July at 5:40pm won both a BAFTA and an Oscar. Starring David Kossoff and Alfie Bass, this acclaimed short film tells the story of a humble clerk, Fender, whose greatest wish is to have an overcoat. He asks his tailor friend, Morry, to make one but unfortunately, Fender dies before it is finished. Returning as a ghost, however, Fender is determined to get his coat! Set in London’s East End, the film was based on a 1953 play by Wolf Mankowitz which was an adaptation of a story by Nikolai Gogol, set in Russia. It’s a cleverly made film which is moving and memorable and covers the subjects of poverty, friendship, and justice in just over half an hour. Don’t miss it!
It stars Katharine Hepburn, Bob Hope, James Robertson Justice, Sid James and David Kossoff – among many others – and it’s showing on TPTV on Saturday 18 July at 4:35pm. That's right, it’s the 1956 British Cold War comedy, The Iron Petticoat. Hepburn plays a Soviet Air Force captain who defects to the West and is taken under the wing of an American Army Captain (Hope) who is tasked with showing her the joys of capitalism. It’s a top-class farce packed with comic misunderstandings. Originally the role played by Hope was pitched to Cary Grant but as he was unavailable, Hope stepped in. Off screen, however, he and Hepburn reportedly had a strained relationship, partly down to the script being rewritten around Hope’s style of comedy. That’s showbiz folks! Nevertheless, it’s still a brilliant showcase for two Hollywood legends at the top of their game.
If you’re a fan of country and western music, then Payday on Saturday 18 July at 9:05pm should be right up your street. Set in the American South, this gripping 1973 drama, stars Rip Torn, in one of his finest performances, as Maury Dann – a ruthless, demanding and womanising singer who hits the road on his latest tour and manipulates those around him to get what he wants. Torn performs all of his own songs in the film, and while Payday isn’t a biopic, Maury Dann is widely believed to have been inspired in part by country music legend Hank Williams. It’s a compelling character study, warts and all, and a forgotten gem of 70s cinema.
Many of you may remember studying Terence Rattigan’s play, The Winslow Boy, at school. Set in the years before the First World War and based on a true story, it follows a naval cadet who is expelled after being accused of stealing a five-shilling postal order. Convinced of his innocence, his parents then demand a trial. Rattigan’s acclaimed play was made into the film The Winslow Boy in 1948, and it receives its TPTV premiere on Sunday 19 July at 6pm. Directed by Anthony Asquith and starring Robert Donat, Cedric Hardwicke and Margaret Leighton, The Winslow Boy is a gripping courtroom drama full of complex characters and moral dilemmas. One of the most popular films at the British box office in 1948, it remains powerful and absorbing to this day.
We’re spooling back to 1970 on Sunday 19 July at 9:25pm for Hammer’s, The Horror of Frankenstein – the only film in the Frankenstein series not to feature Peter Cushing as Victor Frankenstein. Produced, directed and co-written by Jimmy Sangster, it stars Ralph Bates (often regarded as Cushing’s younger successor in the role) as the arrogant, young Baron Victor Frankenstein, who inherits his father’s title, castle and taste for grisly experiments. The supporting cast is a strong one, with David Prowse as the Creature, alongside Kate O’Mara, Veronica Carlson and Dennis Price, all delivering solid performances in this gothic horror/black comedy. This is a production that holds up well, has lavish sets and costumes, and offers an intriguing introduction to Bates as the Baron.
TAKE NOTE DEAR VIEWERS! The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Series 2, BEGINS on Sunday 19 July at 4pm. Join your favourite agents, Napoleon Solo (Robert Vaughn) and Ilya Kuryakin (David McCallum) as they embark on a new series of adventures. The first episode, The Alexander the Greater Affair: Part One sees a mysterious American industrialist stealing a new type of nerve gas from the US Army, which in turn sets Solo and Kuryakin off on the trail of a global conspiracy. We can barely wait to welcome them back!
